Halfway Through Our Grand Voyage: Highlights from 31 Days at Sea from Venice to Cape Town

Today, we’re in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, marking the halfway point of our incredible Grand Voyage, which began 31 days ago in Venice and will conclude in Cape Town on December 20.

The journey so far has been nothing short of extraordinary! We’ve visited 28 ports, including a few new ones, like Elba, and explored fresh sights in familiar destinations such as Avignon, Eze, and Argostoli through shore excursions. The sea gods have truly blessed us with Indian summer days and calm seas, with only two exceptions—remarkable weather for late fall in the Mediterranean.

Highlights onboard included three AzAmazing Evenings, celebrating the cultural treasures of Slovenia, Italy, and Spain. We also savored the flavors of the regions through destination dinners, including two chef’s tables, and danced under the stars at three unforgettable White Nights on the pool deck—quintessential Azamara signatures that make this cruise line a favorite.

We’ve also celebrated with fellow Grand Voyagers at dinners and a cocktail party hosted by our favorite ship officer, Hotel Director Marcelo. The crew has been nothing short of spectacular, greeting us by name as we return to the ship, order wine, or lounge by the pool. Dinner is always a delightful dilemma—should we opt for specialty dining, the country-themed buffets at Windows Café, or the elegant three-course dinners in the main dining room? Thankfully, our days filled with 5–6 miles of walking on tours seem to keep the pounds at bay—or so we hope!

Are we bored with shipboard life? Absolutely not! We’ve made peace with our shower curtain and cozy stateroom, embraced the luxury of afternoon naps, and discovered the joys of wine time—elevated by my nightly vodka martini with olives, which always kicks off the evening with a smile. With the TV off, we enjoy the bliss of no news—because these days, no news truly is good news.

We’ve made wonderful new friends, discovered breathtaking destinations, and continue to cherish the soothing sounds and rhythmic movement of the sea, accompanied by spectacular sunrises. What’s not to love?

As Mary and I look ahead to the second half of our journey, we’re filled with excitement for new destinations and shore adventures, including a safari and visits to Africa’s cultural and natural wonders. We’re also looking forward to relaxing sea days, where you’ll find us by the pool as we sail toward summer down under, under the capable command of Captain Johannes.

Thank you for joining us on this incredible Grand Voyage—we can’t wait to share the second half with you. Cheers, friends!
