rats slathered in grilled onions and
sauerkraut. Bright orange cheese
curds. Fish fry in a can. Milwaukee's
culinary icons were on display at a
convention reception in the spanking
B new Fiserv Forum, home to the NBA
Championship Milwaukee Bucks. There was plenty
of Spotted Cow ale, a beer so popular it's sold in-
side the security area at the airport. Dessert was
covered with billowing cream puffs and a surpris-
ing array of gourmet chocolates.
Milwaukee was exceeding my expectations.
Covid restlessness had become nearly overwhelm-
ing when I heard about a travel writers' conven-
tion in the Brew City. The meeting would bring
together old friends and acquaintances and intro-
duce a new destination. Seemed like a no-brainer.
But there were drawbacks. I broke my femur
last summer and was hobbling around with a cane.
Traveling alone would be a challenge, but the city
and meetings sounded manageable. And I knew my
fellow conventioneers would be patient.
The Milwaukee Art Museum.
Right: Bratwurst is a must on local menus.
