Rafting and Trekking in Peru

                                                                            one’s daughter finishes college
                                                                            and before she starts graduate
                                                              W school?
                                                                If she has a Peter Pan father (who declines to
                                                              grow up), the two of you head off to South Amer-
                                                              ica to run a challenging white water river in the
                                                              Andes. And then follow that up by hiking the
                                                              Inca Trail, known locally as the Camino Inka,
                                                              to the ruins of Machu Picchu.
                                                                Maddie, now a    23-year-old student at the
                                                              University of Wisconsin-Madison veterinary
                                                              medicine school, and I began our adventure
                                                              this August by flying into Cusco, which was the
                                                              capital of the vast Inca Empire from the 13th
                                                              Century until the Spanish conquest in the 16th
                                                              Century. Set at a lofty 11,200 feet, it's a UNESCO
                                                              World Heritage Site that hosts nearly 2 million
                                                              visitors a year.
