the Holocaust.
              22 August 1940
Our supposed “national” radio is clearly an-
tisémitique and Anglophobic. We mistrust the
news it brings. ¶ This morning, we receive a
letter from our friends, the Barrats, who in-
form us that Châlons-sur-Marne was absolute
Hell for two days. The town was severely dam-
aged, and our old house on Rue Grande Etape
demolished. ¶ The radio announces another
wave of antisémitisme — in the form of a new
law governing the practice of medicine by doc-
tors of foreign origin. When can we expect our
expulsion from French territory? My predic-
tion of 1936 has come to pass!
Next to their grave, an empty gravesite held
a diminutive headstone. I deciphered the name
FANNELY, one I had heard only once before,
as my mother's computer password. She never
divulged the password's origin, the name of
her aunt Fannely, her mother's sister who died
