McBryde Garden
Preserving Hawaii’s Botanical Heritage
Story and Photography by Michael Burge
cBryde Garden is the flagship of the
National Tropical Botanical Garden
and is home to the largest concen-
Mtration of native Hawaiian plants
anywhere. McBryde is often called a Noah’s Ark for
tropical flora, as its keepers cultivate and curate many
endangered species, some of which can be seen only
at McBryde.
The National Tropical Botanical Garden consists of
five gardens, four of which are in Hawaii and one in
Florida. McBryde occupies about 200 acres in the
Lawa‘i Valley and is next to and upstream of Allerton
Garden.
Visitors to McBryde are free to roam the grounds
and follow the trails to discover botanical treasures
and explore ancient Hawaiian culture. The garden
houses facsimiles of Hawaiian artifacts and architec-
ture, to show how life was before Captain James Cook
chanced upon on the islands in 1778.
