RHelp," I cried. I was stuck in the bathtub at a
wellness resort in Carefree, Arizona and was
feeling anything but carefree. I screamed as loud
as I could, but no one could hear and besides, I‘d

194 COASTAL GEM BECKONS
Hundreds of miles of hiking trails through giant
redwood forests, verdant green fern canyons
among towering cypress and pines, and rocky
coastal bluffs rising above the blue Pacific beck-
oned me. A storied coastal gem, Mendocino
County promised 24 state and national parks
where nature lovers find “recreation paradise
steeped in seclusion.”
