Denis helped us with our bags to the parking garage
where his impressive black van awaited with its comfy
oversized leather seats – with cup holders. We would
later find out through bits and pieces from Denis and
others that these cushy seats had supported many
rich and famous backsides from around the world –
movie stars to industry and political heavyweights. A
week before he had driven two Cardinals around Dub-
lin during the Pope’s visit. No wonder we felt blessed.
Soon Dublin was in the rearview mirror. Ahead was
the intensely green Irish countryside that stretches
to the other side of the Island too, as it turned out,
Ireland’s fun city, Galway. On the way, Denis explained
the mystery of the missing yellow sculpture. We had
arrived in another different, smaller terminal arrival
area – one evidently with a dearth of art. Case closed.
We didn’t know much about Galway (or most of our
other Irish destinations), but we had read that the old
city was a gateway to the Wild Atlantic Way. We also
knew that it was our kind of place - an energetic two
college town alive with great places to shop, eat, drink
and enjoy being in Ireland.
An eagle sculpture in Cong made
from the famous black bog wood
used in jewelry and sculpures. The
wind-blown grass add drama to the
seascapes of the Wild Atlantic Way.
