Leaving the Garden, we were on our way to County
Mayo when we mentioned our stop in the Galway store
linked to “The Quiet Man.” Ah, Denis said with a smile.
“The movie was filmed in Cong, the town you’ll be
staying in tonight. In the film, the village was called In-
nisfree, and all of the houses and cottages used in the
movie are still there.”
Not 20 minutes later we slowed as we drove over
what looked like an ancient stone bridge; on the other
side, Denis parked the van to explain that this was the
Quiet Man Bridge where Sean Thornton (John Wayne)
dreamed that his mother told him about White O’Morn
Cottage. Nearby was a plaque with an image of John
Wayne sitting on the bridge. In the movie, Sean buys
the cottage and eventually brings Mary Kate (Maureen
O’ Hara) to live there too.
