Ashford Castle

ur next overnight wasn’t in Cong village, as
John Wayne and the cast did in 1950. Instead,
Owe would relax at the luxurious Lodge at Ash-
ford Castle, on the grounds of the magnificent castle
of the same name. The entrance to the 350 acres of
ancient woodland that surround both was just at the
edge of the village.
The estate is jaw-dropping. The castle has long
been a hotel and has hosted countless world celebri-
ties including Ronald Reagan while he was president,
and Irish born actor Pierce Brosnan who celebrated
his marriage and wedding reception there.
The original castle, built in 1228, has undergone
many changes and owners over time, including owner-
ship by the Guinness family in the 1800’s.
Ashford Castle and the Lodge are considered top
hotels in Ireland. One recently added amenity at the
Castle is a movie theater with plush seating and free
popcorn, along with regular screenings of “The Quiet
Man.” No one will be bored here, with a state of the art
spa, championship golf course and a host of activi-
ties on the grounds including zip lining, tree climbing,
cycling, kayaking, boat cruises on the lake, fly fishing,
horseback riding and yes, falconry.
