There are several hiking trails on the
property. I took the 2-mile Inspiration Point
loop to gaze at ocean views. It must be
noted that Jigsaw Farms operates horse‐
back riding lessons and trail rides Tuesday
through Friday. You could really feel like
Will on horseback on these trails — he used
to ride over to Malibu to hang with his
friends, the Adamsons. Check the web site
for reservations and information. Parking
fee is $12. (https://www.parks.ca.gov/

For my next four public gardens, I
moved from Santa Monica to Pasadena, on
the eastern side of Los Angeles’s region.
Here I stayed at the famed Langham Hunt‐
ington, a 100-year-old grande dame of ho‐
tels just a few minutes from the awe-
inspiring Huntington Gardens, which was to
come.
But first I found California Botanic
Garden in Claremont, the largest garden
devoted to California native plants.
More than 6,000 species of plants
are native to California and many are
found nowhere else on the planet. “This is
so significant that California has been de‐
clared a biodiversity hotspot: a place on
Earth that is rich with life but is threatened
by modern challenges including population
growth, urban development and a chang‐
ing climate,” notes the garden.
California Botanic Garden covers 86
acres in three distinct areas: SoCal Gar‐
dens, the Mesa Gardens, and the California
Plant Communities. Admission is $10; open
Tuesday through Sunday. (www.calbg.org).
