Dating to the 13th century, the great me-
dieval building with its collapsed roof stands as
a reminder of the devastating earthquake of
1755 that destroyed most of the city. The
Gothic cathedral’s arched roof fell on the con-
gregation attending Mass on that All saints’ Day.
Only the arches of the cathedral still stand, a
memorial to earthquake victims. The floor of the
church now serves as a summer theater and part
of an archaeological museum.
Some of the convent’s 16th and 17th century
buildings that survived house the indoor seg-
ment of the museum. Much of the convent art
and other items of artistic and cultural interest
remain in view beneath the arches and the sac-
risty, also undamaged in the disaster.
