Mercado de Cebada
Mercado de Cebada in La Latina is the polar oppo-
site of trendy, posh Mercado de San Miguel. One of
the largest and oldest in the city, this no-frills Mer-
cado sprawls across three floors, though time, com-
petition and the pandemic have taken their toll.
Many booths were closed or vacant when we visited,
and only a few shoppers and some tourists wandered
the halls. During our month-long stay, we stopped by
several times and foot traffic always was light.
Although down on its heels, Cebada still has
enough outstanding grocery, meat, seafood, spe-
cialty food and drink stands to fill the needs of the
community. On our tour, we learned about and sam-
pled traditional Spanish staples, including olives, ja-
mon, cheeses, and anchovies. The introduction
helped us make selections as we shopped during the
rest of our stay.
