Madrid’s most famous spot for churros is on a
tiny side street, just off the Plaza Mayor in the
San Ginés passageway. Chocolateria San Gines
has been making churros since 1894. Housed in
a former inn, the restaurant keeps a 19th cen-
tury ambiance with its white marble tables, vin-
          tage lamps and mirror walls.
You know you’ve found the place because
there’s usually a long line waiting to order and
grab a table. Don’t let that discourage you. The
line moves quickly and the sweet, thick, hot
chocolate and crispy churro fingers are worth
the wait. We enjoyed ours mid-afternoon, grate-
ful for the walk back to La Latina to burn up the
          considerable calories.
