star-chef Thomas Thomas Keller. To celebrate the
            40th anniversary of the Schmitts’ first dinner
            there, Keller invited the couple to a special dinner
            at his world-renowned restaurant. In Fall 2021,
            Chronicle Books will publish Sally’s cookbook, “Six
            California Kitchens,” honoring her history as a pio-
            neer of California cuisine.
              Philo is more than an apple farm. The extended
            Schmitt family operation grows its own produce
            and raises goats for milk and cheese. They rent out
            three farmstay cottages and offer meals and cook-
            ing lessons. The cottages - each with an inviting
            porch - sit among apple trees. We could only imag-
            ine the perfume in the air when they blossomed in
            spring.
