UDAIPUR
From the big city of Mumbai and its modern,
highly-efficient airport, we flew to Udaipur
(1:15 on Air India), population around 600,000
and promoted by locals as the “Venice of the
East.” The peaceful Rajasthan countryside is
surrounded by mountains and artificial lakes
with several large palaces and ancient forts and
temples. It has become a destination for an in-
creasing number of Indian weddings, including
among Bollywood stars
We stayed at the Oberoi Udiavilas, No. 3 in
the Conde Nast readers’ poll of best hotels in
India and No. 18 in the world. The architecture
was inspired by the palaces of the area – stun-
ning, classic, with decorative domes, marble-
lined courtyards, fountains, lush gardens, pea-
cocks wandering the grounds and expansive
views of Lake Pichola and the City Palace
across the water. Each of the 87 Rooms is deco-
rated with local art and artefacts. The spa and
pool overlook the lake.
A boat ride around the lake is a must. We had
a midday escape to Jag Mandir island and Palace
where we were treated to a classic Indian lunch
with 10 courses. Post lunch, we cruised by the
Lake Palace, now a five-star hotel, and the City
Palace. Dinner at the hotel was at water’s edge
with a stunning view of the City Palace at night.
The creative array of Indian cuisine was lightly
tuned for our Western tastes and the evening
flowed with impeccable service. After dinner, we
watched an Indian engagement party for some
100 to 150, with live band on stage, flashing
lights and hotel staff circulating with food and
beverages. As happens in India, our group was
invited to join the celebration, to include going
on stage for photos and videos with the future
bride and groom. We felt honored to join several
generations of happy, smiling people in colorful
garb celebrating the couple with great Indian
energy and spirit.
