If You Go






                                                              Visiting the Culloden battle site is easily done
                                                            from nearby Inverness, a city five miles to the
                                                            west. Cabs and public transit are available from
                                                            central Inverness. Operated by the National Trust
                                                            for Scotland, there's a visitors center with cafe,
                                                            restrooms and gift shop, as well as interpretative
                                                            presentations and artifacts from the battle. There
                                                            is a fee for admission. Check first to see if tickets
                                                            need to be purchased in advance and whether
                                                            guides will be available to walk the battlefield
                                                            with you for a small extra fee. An overlook on the
                                                            roof of the visitors center provides a panorama of
                                                            the open moor and trails, which can be slippery
                                                            and muddy when walking. Stay on the paths, you'll
                                                            be walking among burial sites, many marked with
                                                            stones.
