If You Go
Visiting the Culloden battle site is easily done
from nearby Inverness, a city five miles to the
west. Cabs and public transit are available from
central Inverness. Operated by the National Trust
for Scotland, there's a visitors center with cafe,
restrooms and gift shop, as well as interpretative
presentations and artifacts from the battle. There
is a fee for admission. Check first to see if tickets
need to be purchased in advance and whether
guides will be available to walk the battlefield
with you for a small extra fee. An overlook on the
roof of the visitors center provides a panorama of
the open moor and trails, which can be slippery
and muddy when walking. Stay on the paths, you'll
be walking among burial sites, many marked with
stones.
