Although she painted skyscrapers in Manhattan
and titillating portraits of flowers, her landscapes
ofNewMexicoelevatedherintotheupperechelons
of art history. Those paintings may never have
been made if it weren’t for an unexpected detour.
In April 1917, few months after her acclaimed
first solo show in New York, the 29-year-old took
a trip to the West with her sister Claudia. The
train taking them from Texas to Colorado was
forced to detour through Santa Fe. Like most
first-time visitors, O’Keeffe was captivated by
the broad vistas, bold colors, and radiant skies.
