utes later, 10 dogs raced across the plains
to reach the dead impala. We watched as
the animals tore meat from the impala,
dragging it across the dirt as each fought
to get their share of the feast. It was a gory
but beautiful scene.
We had one final game drive to return
us to the airstrip, where we would take an‐
other small plane to connect with our flight
to Cape Town. On our way to the airstrip,
we came upon a herd of more than 300
fierce-looking water buffalo. They glared
at us as we watched them. Finally, our
driver made his way through the herd, who
moved aside to let us through.
This was the trip of a lifetime. I’ll never
look at a wild animal the same way again.
