It’s a tip he learned from his beloved
teacher, a five-time finalist in the nation’s
Super Bowl of bull riding, a skilled cowboy
with more than $1 million in rodeo earnings.
That teacher also happens to be his father.
Kasen’s dad, now 38, hung up his spurs
seven years ago. Back when he was even
younger than son, he fancied bull riding
because he liked Ferdinand the Bull chil-
dren’s stories. He borrowed the $5 entry
fee the first time he climbed aboard a
steer at the Cody Nite Rodeo. Like his boy,
he stayed on the full 8 seconds.
When opening night lights dimmed at
the Cody rodeo arena, the former bull rider
and the newbie headed home to the nearby
spread where dad now raises bucking
rodeo bulls. There wasn’t much need for
conversation on that ride back to the
ranch; these two cowboys pretty much
knew what the other was thinking – and
feeling.
