when “Wildhorse Jack,” an Alberta rancher,
served the first pancakes during Stampede
on a camp stove in his chuckwagon, claiming
the Stampede wasn’t just heroes and horses
– it was also about heritage and community.
This was his way to give back. Now, thou-
sands of volunteers serve millions of free
flapjack breakfasts, and there are dozens of
places to get them, including Olympic Plaza
where hot bacon flapjacks are made on au-
thentic chuckwagons. The most fun place for
me was OMO Teppan Japanese Restaurant
who serve green tea pancakes with wagyu
korokke (potato croquettes). To get your
pancake, the chef would hand you a paper
plate and flip a pancake from his grill in
your direction. If you caught it on the plate,
you’d receive a food gift voucher. I caught it
with my hand, but still received a voucher.

Should you go to the Calgary Stampede in
2024? Heck yes! And take the kids, too, be-
cause there are amusement rides, baby ani-
mals to pet, and more. Be sure to book your
hotel well in advance (now), and while
you’re waiting for next July, you can prac-
tice yelling out, “Yahoo!”
