            REDISCOVERING ITALY

“I taly offers one the most as a place that captures one’s very being.
                       priceless of all one's posses-
I fell in love with Italy years ago. How-
                       sions - one's own soul.”
ever, this past summer, on my first trip back
                         So wrote American journalist
crowd, as numerous others have written
Barbara Grizzuti Harrison, a sentiment with post-COVID, I was not eager to be one in a
which anyone who has had the opportunity about the extent to which Italy has been
to visit Italy would surely agree. It could be overrun with tourists. To combat this, I did
the decadent food, the unparalleled concen- something I never dreamed of doing before:
tration of UNESCO World Heritage sites, I rented a car. With keys in hand, I set off
the romantic language spoken as much with on a course across much of Northern Italy,
the hands as with the mouth or perhaps the visiting places off the beaten path to re-dis-
Italian people themselves, whose warmth cover the Italy that, as Harrison remarked,
and affection surround nearly all who visit– offered me an opportunity to connect with
but whatever the reason, Italy stands alone my own soul.
