street, so Malpica’s bakeries are definitely on
local tourist circuit—although for the life of us
we can’t figure out why.
The bus started its climb into the
mountains only to make another quick stop at
a family-run terra cotta pottery-making
factory and retail outlet. The stop was very
worthwhile, mainly because it offered free
restrooms and cold drinks. Knick knacks and
pots of all sizes were handcrafted, fired, and
painted on-site, resulting in typical tourist clay
pottery. We didn’t see any shopping bags in
hand as our group re-boarded the bus.
The second village on the tour was
Concordia, founded in 1565 by a Spanish
conquistador and home to a magnificent 18th-
