Copala’s chief attraction is the San Jose
church, dating back to the 1700s. They perch
it on a hill at the center of town, facing the
small central plaza. We peeked inside before
heading back to the bus. On the way, we
passed a beautiful little adobe house painted
bright yellow with a charming patio and a
lovely garden. On the porch, an old man who
looked like Santa Claus sat reading a
magazine. He called out to us and invited us to
look inside.
He spoke English, and when we inquired,
he told us he and his wife had come here
from Seattle to get away from it all. The
patio featured a collection of decorator
items with images of Frida Kahlo. His wife
was a big fan. So are we. We wished we
could have stayed to chat. He looked like he
had a lot of stories to tell.
On the long ride back to the ship, most of
us napped. In the end, we enjoyed the tour’s
glimpses into the Mexican countryside far
removed from glitzy resorts and tourist
trappings. But, we decided, if we ever dock
in Mazatlan again, we would most likely stay
on the ship.
