76 THE GRAND TETONS
Every travel destination has its surprises, and
Grand Teton National Park was no different.
We expected sawtooth peaks, sugar-crystal
snow and bracing cold. After all, this was the
middle of winter. What we didn’t expect were
elk in their hundreds, maybe thousands.
84 BASQUE COUNTRY
The region covers an area of around 2,800
square miles. a region rich with history,
colorful culture, imaginative cuisine, and
natural wonders and attractions.
100 BATHING BY THE BOSPORUS
We’ve all had our hair shampooed, but our bod-
ies? In the vibrant and historic Karaköy district
of Istanbul, just up the hill from the sparkling
Bosporus, I climbed a steep street, stopping to
gawk at the serpentine Camondo stairs on my
right, that wound up to the street above.
106 THE POCONOS
I’d never seen deer that close. In many cul-
tures, the deer symbolizes spiritual authority,
so I took this as a sign that my weekend stay at
The Lodge at Woodloch would be very special.
