We didn’t go far on our first day of the cruise; in
fact, the ship didn’t move out of the dock in Luxor.
After a painless check-in, we explored the ship and
rested in our cabin until lunch – an excellent buffet
that included pasta and pizza served by the cheer-
ful head chef. Other stations included carved meats,
fresh bread, and desserts – all equal to or better than
fare we’ve had on some luxury cruise lines.
After lunch, a dozen passengers with Memphis
Tours gathered in the ship’s great salon to meet Mo-
hamed and learn about touring in the days ahead, in-
cluding this day’s visit to Karnack and Luxor temples.
Before he closed the meeting, Mohamed suggested
we adopt a group name, Pharaohs, that would make
it easy to communicate in temple sites crawling with
other tour groups. In about a half hour, the Pharaohs
climbed into a waiting van for our first adventure
            together.

The grand entrance to the temple just
            before the sand storm arrives.
