                         hen you stand on the shore of Lake Superior
                   Wyou can’t help hearing Gordon Lightfoot’s
                   “TheWreckoftheEdmundFitzgerald”echoinyour
                   head. Superior’s greenish-gray water buffets the
                   rocky shore in waves, flexing more like an ocean
                   than a lake. The wind bites. The rain attacks.
                       ThisisMichigan’sUpperPeninsula,andinspite
                   of the occasional spate of foul weather, it is well
                   worth the visit. We went to experience the fall col-
                   orsasSeptemberfadedintoOctober.Thepeninsula
                   is well-forested with maple, oak, birch, and many
                   otherdeciduoustreesthatcatchfirewithablazeof
                   color in early autumn. Timing that color turn is a bit
                   ofaguessinggame,andweguessedalittleearly.But
                   we were not too early to drink in the Upper Penin-
                   sula’s sweetness and taste a little of its bitterness,
                   which is what makes this place special.
