nal of my great-grandfather, decorated
army surgeon Dr. Prosper Lévy-Neymarck,
he and his wife were sheltered from the
Nazis in a local wine tunnel. It was Pros‐
per’s journal that led me to Rosières:
9 May 1940
“On news of] the mobilization of Sep‐
tember 1939, Anny comes to take us to
Rosières, where the risks of aerial bom‐
bardment are less than in Nancy, predicted
to be an early victim of enemy planes. Af‐
ter the first frost, and, in light of the calm
that reigned overhead (other than air raid
alerts) we return to our apartment in
Nancy...”
