isbon is exhilarating and exhausting.
We filled our thirty days in the Por-
tuguese capital with many delightful
L adventures–like strolls along the Tagus
River, seeing the city aglow in the morning
light. Or a lunchtime lesson from our walking
tour guide on how to eat sardines. Others
were daunting - like non-stop construction
noise and scarily crowded streets as this dy-
namic city charges into post pandemic pros-
perity. Add an Airbnb nightmare - failed
elevators, clogged plumbing and the sudden
death of our landlord - and this sojourn often
left us feeling incredulous.
Lisbon is one of the oldest cities in the
world, predating London, Paris and Rome. It
sits on seven hills, home to more than a half-
million citizens. It’s mainland Europe’s west-
ernmost capital city and the only one on the
Atlantic coast. The city’s ubiquitous historic
buildings, public spaces and monuments of-
fered an eye-popping mix of colors and styles
accented breathtaking natural beauty.
