ital nomads and expats. The demand for urban
and coastal housing has pushed lower income
locals to live in high-density apartment com-
plexes in the suburbs and neighboring inland
towns.
The lack of affordable housing is not dissimi-
lar to what’s happening in many major destina-
tion cities, including our hometown, San Diego.
And like our city, Lisbon also has its share of
homeless, petty crime, traffic and graffiti. That
said, most visitors won’t even notice these is-
sues because they’re too busy enjoying the
many wonderful things Lisbon offers.
Our daily routine usually included a tour or
exploring at least one destination, attraction, or
venue. We always either took advantage of Lis-
bon’s excellent public transportation or walked,
averaging two to eight miles per day up and
down Lisbon’s hilly streets.
We like to cook, and frequently made meals in
our apartment. Affordable fresh produce, locally
sourced meats and fish, and Portuguese wines
were conveniently close in several nearby mar-
kets, including a giant Mercado just a block
away. Luckily, these stores also carried most of
