We visited places where spies lived and hung
out.. James Bond sprung from the imagination
of a young security officer, Ian Fleming, when
he was posted in Lisbon. “Casino Royal,” one of
his classic books, takes place in a casino-hotel
he frequented in Estoril, a coastal neighbor-
hood of Lisbon.
Another we enjoyed explored Street Art
around one of Lisbon’s oldest neighborhoods,
Alfama. The city’s vertical surfaces are fair
game for street art and graffiti, some allowed,
even encouraged — some renegade. The guide
introduced us to street art culture and the
community of artists, and explained why some
works were defaced with graffiti while others
were not. They also point out Lisbon’s enlight-
ened approach to this art that enlivens many
neighborhoods and modern and otherwise
bland apartment complexes.
