Life in Madrid
It didn’t take us long to get into a comfortable
part-tourist, part-local routine. Most days in-
cluded a visit to a new destination - museums and
gardens, parks or landmarks. Spanish lunches, en-
joyed after 2 p.m., became a favorite restaurant
meal, while breakfasts generally were enjoyed at
home. Most mornings, Ron grabbed a yogurt and
bread warm from the oven at the Carrefour,
though he occasionally satisfied his cravings for
American-style eggs and bacon feast.
On many afternoons, we dined alfresco, taking
advantage of the Menu del Dia, the affordable
three-course meal - a starter, entrée, dessert, and
a glass of wine or beer - priced around $13. These
leisurely lunches easily explain why Spaniards
loved siestas and dine lightly on tapas at night.
Many evenings we either snacked on cheese, cold
