Noyo Harbor and its fishing fleet also played a
vital role in the community’s economic rise. But
           over-fishing, pollution, and government oversight
have taken their toll, contributing to Fort Bragg’s
recurring hard times. The lumber industry is still
around, but a shadow of its glory days. Today,
tourism and even the marijuana industry are
playing increasingly important roles in the city’s
           livelihood.
Fort Bragg is still true to its blue-collar roots,
resisting the gentrification of neighboring Men-
docino Village. No one can accuse this city of be-
ing quaint, but tourist’s dollars have smoothed
out the edges. Today, you can enjoy jazz at North
Coast Brewing’s Sequoia Room, classical perfor-
mances by the Symphony of the Redwoods, and
musicals staged by Gloriana Opera Company.
First-class hotels, world-class dining, wine tast-
ing rooms, and craft breweries are part of the
new boom. And where else could a train line
named Skunk and the town dump become major
           tourist attractions?
