for our picnic lunch, sometimes in a
churchyard filled with fragrant vintage
roses, sometimes along the river, where a
cool breeze refreshed us as we caught our
breath and chatted over what we’d seen
during the morning.
The rides were self-guided with signs on
lampposts and street signs, showing where
to go. We only got lost once, but quickly

ferries took cyclists across the river to
connect to the bike path on the other side.
Locals offered samples of apricot
liqueur in the tiny village of Dürnstein, Aus‐
tria, also famous as the place where King
Richard the Lionheart, returning from the
crusades, was captured in 1192 by the Aus‐
trian Duke Leopold the V.
We passed fields of wild poppies and
local markets selling delectable looking
cherries and peaches.
Clockwise: Fruit stand, King Richard, Landon with
lunch and with bikes..
