moil became a Jesuit university in the 16th
century. When the Jesuit order was offi-
cially suppressed in the late 1700s, the
Clementinum merged with Prague’s vener-
able Charles University, and today is home
to the Czech National Library. Although not
as well known as other Prague sites, the
Clementinum campus and Mirror Chapel
are national treasures. The complex in-
cludes an astronomical tower and a
Baroque library containing some 6 million
books, and the Mirror Chapel is named for
the mirrors embedded in its ceiling and
walls. Built in 1724, the chapel is now a
sought after concert venue and houses a
magnificent organ that supposedly was
played by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart dur-
ing one of his Prague visits. The ensemble
was outstanding and the concert a memo-
rable parting gift, as Prague bid us
farewell with a performance in a setting as
perfect as any in Europe.
The Mirror Chapel in Prague’s Clementinum
houses an organ that Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart is believed to have played.
