As we walked through the market, nearly
every candy shop offered samples of Turkish
Delight, a sugary candy flavored with rosewa-
ter and citrus. But after sampling two or
three, as delicious as they were, our sweet
tooth was sated. Other wares were touted to
cure any ailment ranging from arthritis to in-
somnia. Teas were perfumed with flowers and
spice. Expensive saffron was sold by the
ounce or in sealed tins for the journey back to
the U.S.
The market is in Eminonu neighborhood,
one of the oldest in Istanbul. Like any
crowded popular tourist spot, it's safe to visit
and is well-policed. However, there are pick-
pockets and con artists here. Be aware of your
surroundings and valuables.
The Spice Bazaar is open daily from 9am to
7pm., except on Sundays and public holidays.
