When it comes to food and drink, Cairo shines as
bright as most cosmopolitan cities around the world.
Regardless of your tastes or pocketbook, you’ll find
plenty to like from talented chefs serving every type
of cuisine imaginable. Most of the major hotels boast
at least one or more dining venue of note. But when
in Cairo, eat as the Egyptians do. We did and enjoyed
it – well most of it.
After an exhausting day of sight-seeing in the heat
and crowds in Cairo, it was hard to get motivated to
get dressed and go out to dinner. So our favorite place
to unwind and get refreshed was The Roof at the
Kempinski where we quaffed good Egyptian wines
and munched on tasty small dishes – all very reason-
able. A bottle of wine was less than $20, and a heavy
appetizer like a trio of sliders was less than $10.
Breakfasts included in our hotel package were
world-class. The dining room was bright and cheery,
and displays of fresh bread and pastry were a feast
for the eyes. We had a choice of table service or
grazing the extensive buffet and cooking stations.
We opted for a little of both while enjoying juices
and coffees brought by our attentive servers and the
eggs, pancakes, waffles, and crepes cooked to order
they carried to us from the cooking stations. We also
roamed the buffet’s familiar and foreign options –
cheeses, dips, pickled veggies, sweets, fresh fruits
and more. And unlike so many buffet breakfasts we
have experienced, the hot food was hot, and the cold
food was cold, the fruit was ripe, and everything was
fresh and made in-house.
We always enjoyed the breakfasts at
the Kempinski Hotel. Everything fresh
and made-to-order hot dishes.
