We attended another Evensong, this time at
Westminster Abbey; visited the Design Museum (a
hit with everyone) and, per my suggestion, the
Churchill War Rooms near our hotel. Carl and I
have toured it several times but I was concerned
whether it would be suitable for a child. Research-
ing online, I found a positive review by a 9-year-old
boy and decided that Kalea should see it, at least
to learn a bit about Winston Churchill. Luckily the
line wasn't long and we got in right away.
“Do you know who Winston Churchill was?” I
asked her.
“He was like the president?” she responded.
I explained that he had been the British prime
minister during World War II, and that we would
see a museum and the underground rooms where
he had conducted the war with his cabinet and
generals. “It will show you how people lived back
then—75 years ago,” I explained, “with old furni-
ture, typewriters, telephones—including a direct
undersea line to the White House.” I also told her
that his mother Jennie was American.
Kalea was intrigued with some hands-on ac-
tivities in the museum—especially multiple choice
questions that asked her to pick the missing last
one or two words of his famous speeches. She got
most of them right!
And she told me that she would recommend
the Churchill War Rooms for children!
Her favorite England trip activities?
“1) Hampton Court, 2) Windsor Castle, 3)
'Wicked', and 4) the London Eye!”
She was a real Travel Trouper!
Upon our arrival home, Kalea handed me a
bouquet of sunflowers (my favorite)--and this
thank you note:
Dear Tia Sharon,
I appreciate you because you brought me to England.
I loved visiting all the castles! I liked Hampton Court
best.
Love, Kalea ❤❤❤
I can't say who had more fun—Kalea or me. And
I hope to plan another family bonding excursion!
