Scotland in Style
here are some itches you
might feel compelled to
scratch in Scotland–and I’m
not just referring to the dis‐
comfort of wearing a wool
T kilt while “going commando.”
No, I’m talking about teeing off on one of
its famous fairways. Sipping a tipple or
three of malt whisky. Enjoying a bleating
ditty, not unlike a chorus of disgruntled
geese, squeezed from a bag cradled in the
armpit of a piper.
What you might not imagine is standing
upon the lawn on the Isle of Eriska, a
sprawling Highland resort, waggling bits of
raw meat at an African Tawny Eagle named
Fernley. Despite having a name like a shy,
bespectacled librarian with an extensive
stamp collection, Fernley is a majestic mass
of sinew, beak and terrifying talons.
