DAY TRIPS

               Other recommendations led to attractions
            in nearby towns.
One morning, Conchita arranged a driver
to take us to Monte Albán, a sprawling arche‐
ological site about 20 minutes away. The an‐
cient Zapotec capital, once home to 35,000
people, thrived between 500 BC and 800 AD.
It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987.
Today its imposing architecture and enormous
carved stones take visitors’ breath away –
literally, for those who opt to climb the struc‐
            tures.
Another day we hired a driver to show us
the highlights of “Ruta Magica de las Arte‐
sanas,” a road that weaves among small valley
towns known for producing traditional crafts:

Excursions from Oaxaca City might include a
day exploring the ancient Zapotec city at Monte
Alban or a tour of a workshop in San Martin
Tilcajete where master crafters create intricate
            and fantastical alebrijes.
