I was on a Viking Star shore excursion in tiny
Nanortalik, the most southern town in Green-
land, pop. 1,100. My husband Carl and I had
signed up for a 90-minute walking tour on a
crisp, sunny August day—temperature 45.

78 STORYBOOK CASTLE

On a clear day, standing on the battlements of
the Pena Palace, you can see all the way to Lis-
bon, 18 miles off. And, if you stretch your imag-
ination, you can see all the way to a foothill of
the Bavarian Alps — one crowned by a Cin-
derella castle called Neuschwanstein.

A modest sign announced the place. There were
no lines of tourists trying to get in. You could walk
by it on your way to a lunch of grilled sardines and
not notice you were passing The Portuguese
School of Equestrian Art (Escola Portuguesa de
Arte Equestre), one of the world’s “Big Four” clas-
sical riding academies.

Hiking in forests painted yellow, orange and
red; wandering down rural roads where goats
and horses greet me; and touring historic
homes where the past comes alive are the
stuff of my travel dreams. They came true in
October.
