The name is drawn from the restaurant’s loca-
tion in a group of adobe houses known as the Mc-
Comb Compound. Noted designer Alexander
Girard gave the restaurant its distinctive spare
southwestern style with cream-colored interiors
minimally accented with folk art from his collec-
tion. During our visit in early April, the popular
outdoor patio was still closed.
It’s rare when a sommelier is a highlight of a din-
ing experience. The Compound Wine Manager
Kristina Hayden Bustamante honed in on our wine
palate and pocketbook to suggest a terrific, af-
fordable 2016 La Montesa Rioja red. This Spanish
find earned high points from experts who praised
its super juicy Ganache flavors with citrus accents.
We were equally impressed with its affordability.
We could see why Wine Spectator has recognized
The Compound for its exceptional wine list for the
last 17 years.
