The Shed

Like Santa Fe’s Tia Sophia and The Pink Adobe, The Shed
is a Santa Fe classic. It’s been serving red chile and blue
corn specialties along with super-strong margaritas since
Thornton Carswell opened it on Burro Alley in 1953. The
name was derived from the structure that sheltered bur-
ros while their owners quenched their thirst in the corner
                cantina.
Managed by the third generation of Carswells, The Shed
is now located just off the plaza on Palace Avenue. It can’t
be missed since there’s always a line of thirsty, hungry pa-
trons outside. Guest are led to tables on the brick and flag-
stone patio or in one of nine mismatched rooms in the
adobe hacienda that dates back to 1692.
The Shed is almost always full. Ask a local and they’ll
most likely reply that the food is great but “good luck get-
ting in.” That should not be a problem in the future. Its
website now accepts dinner reservations up to three
months in advance. Without reservations, you join the
                waitlist for lunch or dinner.
