from me when a giant vulture flew rather closely
over my head. We had reached our next stop,
Fortress Hohenwerfen, just in time for the daily
birds of prey show. “You better put anything color-
ful away”, a staff member told me. “The birds are

Since 1077, the castle has sat on a steep peak,
high above the Salzach Valley. In 1968, it was used
as a set for the World War Two film Where Eagles
Dare which starred Clint Eastwood and Richard
Burton. The snow that year was so severe that the
latter got stuck with his wife Elizabeth Taylor in
the village of Werfen and couldn’t get back to
Salzburg.
