A Sweet Interlude

That sugar rush set the tone for the rest of my
stay. I indulged in deserts and candies with a “no
worries” attitude—as did many of the family members
attending the wedding. We shared our favorites at a
final two-family picnic, where the grilled chicken and
veggies balanced the sugar rush. Everybody knows
about Tim Tams, right? Did you know they come in
dark chocolate, caramel and cappuccino? Have you
tried an Arnott’s Mint Slice? They’re what a Thin Mint
longs to be. Australia’s legendary licorice comes in
black, red, striped and stuffed. A tip: I couldn’t find the
strawberry with white chocolate at the airport when
trying to pass off my last Australian dollar. There are
gaps in the supplies at various themed shops. If you
find something you like, stock up in the city.
Coffee shops and restaurants all seem to have a
sweets display. One restaurant featured a martini-
dessert combo. Another, at the soaring Gallery of
Modern Art (GOMA), used chocolate dusted over wat-
tleseed custard to create a seemingly impenetrable
indigenous artwork. Even the wedding reception had
a dessert table that rivaled a patisserie—along with
           cake, of course.

Visitors feed kangaroos and wallabies in a
rambling meadow at the Lone Pine Koala
sanctuary. Right: Dozens of koalas pose on
eucalyptus trees in their habitat. Opposite:
            Emus stroll about the meadow.
