to purchase another ticket to visit the room with the
golden mask, but you can easily see it from the door-
way. No photos allowed in that room.)
Another highlight for us was the Royal Mummy
Room. This too requires an extra ticket to view the 11
mummies on display. We had seen mummies before
in a San Diego museum, so we weren’t blown away
by the two rows of leather-skinned remains. But my
appreciation grew as we realized these were mum-
mies of some of the most famous rulers in history,
including the recently discovered remains of Hat-
shepsut.
Hatshepsut, we would learn later in our trip, is
revered as a great queen, much more admired than
Cleopatra, dismissed as a Greek outsider. Also
included in the gang of 11 was perhaps the most
influential of all Pharaohs, Ramses II, who construct-
