would have been overwhelmed, as we wanderer
through the galleries, busy with tour groups,
students and tourists like us. Unfortunately,
photos are not allowed.
The collection and the museum were the ideas
of the Spanish Bourbon kings and queens, begin-
ning with Philip II. All competed with their ruling
European cousins to have the biggest and best of
everything, including a Palace (a challenge Spain
won, besting Versailles). Only after many return
visits could their art holdings on display here be
fully appreciated.
