throaty groan of foghorns. It’s where we trade
deadlines for tidelines; where we follow a trail in-
stead of a routine. It’s where we go to breathe

It’s about a dozen miles as the crow flies from the
village of Bayfield, WI to Stockton Island in the
southwest corner of Lake Superior. But on a three-
day sailing trip last summer in Dave Cushman, and I
were taking the long route as we tacked back and
forth on our 33-foot vessel, the Breeze.

You can do this, I told myself. I stripped out of
my yellow expedition jacket, wool cap, gloves,
fleece layers, tights, rain pants, and long un-
derwear, down to my bathing suit. I was ready
to step into the frigid South Atlantic Ocean off
Deception Island to become a member of the
Antarctic Polar Plunge Club.
